Michael Hare, Optometrist
Michael is the founder of VISION Michael Hare and brings a wealth of clinical and leadership experience to the team. A lifelong Gold Coast local, he began practising in 1977 and later became sole owner of both Southport and Benowa locations in 2010. In 2023, he welcomed Jonathan McCorriston as a partner to help lead the growing practice.
Named Queensland Optometrist of the Year in 2002, Michael served for over 20 years with Optometry Australia, including as State President and National Vice President. In 2006, he was among the first cohort to gain prescribing rights and completed postgraduate therapeutic training at QUT. He became a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry in 1997.
Michael’s clinical interests include low vision, contact lenses, ocular pathology, and clinical photography. He’s contributed to humanitarian work across the Pacific, including a five-year outreach program in the Solomon Islands training a local ophthalmologist with Dr John Kearney. He’s a previous international winner in ocular photography and regularly hosts student placements and mentors young optometrists.
Outside the clinic, Michael is a passionate trail runner, model railway enthusiast, and long-time manager and sponsor of the Misfits touch football team, now over 50 seasons strong. His leadership continues to shape the values and direction of the practice he founded.
